Many experiences may have been different for her, but she still lives as many children do; with rules, and playing outdoors with her imagination.

The main reason that his book was written was to depict the life of a young girl as she grows up in a situation that most do not encounter. She and her brothers spent many hours outdoors playing in the junkyard; they would play baptism where one kid would pretend to be the pastor and the other would be the one being baptized. Sometimes the pastor would leave the baptized under too long. One trait that her father wanted her to have was to be able to play the piano. She hated it so much and eventually told her father that she would not play it anymore.
She would rather play outside with her brothers in the junkyard. They would be very creative in what they did with their spare time. They would tie gasoline tanks together and make a raft. She would play with her dolls in the back of the car, pretending to nurse them. She loved pretending she was a mother.

Her father is very smart. He knows how to take old beat up cars off of other people's hands, even if the car holds a special place in the owner's heart. Her father loves animals and cannot stand to see or hear that an animal has been tortured or hurt, big or small. He stands up for all animals, a homing pigeon, a dog, a snake, a tortes, a stork, and a turtle.

One time, a turtle was walking across the road. A boy started playing with the turtle with his foot. It was a snapping turtle and supposedly they do not let go until it lightnings. The turtle grabbed a hold of his foot and would not let go. The boy stomped his foot on the ground and broke the poor turtle's jaw. Soon after the incident, her brothers told her father what had happened. After their father talked with the boy, he turned to his children. He pulled out his belt and gave them all whippings with it. He thought that the could have prevented the incident. If kids were fighting, all he had to do was touch his belt and they would stop immediately.

Another time, her dad found a dog lying on the side of the road. He gave the dog some prescription pills that he had at the house to ease it's pain even though he believed that it would not survive the night. In the morning, he went back to check on the dog and it was still alive. He nursed it back to health then set it free. He found many animals and all of them he tried to help. He found a stork that they let live in the house. Soon after finding the stork he built a house for it outdoors.

He even saved his son's life once. Three of his four children go for a boat ride and do not know how to swim. The two boys sat on a bench in the boat and one of them stands up because he thought he saw an alligator. The other two boys went flying overboard. It was Sunday and they had just come home from church. Their father was still dressed in his suit and dove in after his sons just in time to save them. He would have given anything to keep them safe. He wanted to keep them so safe that he did not want his children to be corrupted by the outside world. He threw out the only TV that they ever had soon after they bought it. Also, to make sure that his kids did not get made fun of for the way they lived, he did not allow his children to bring friends to the house. To avoid awkward situations he did not allow them to go over to other friends' houses either.

I really liked this book since it had short stories that I could remember even a long time after reading it. Her book was very descriptive and did a great job of showing the way that she grew up. It was very realistic and I hope that many people get to read her book.

Afghanistan - First You Must Understand the Country and the Culture - Book Review

It's very interesting but not a lot of people know the history of Afghanistan, even though our military has spent over eight years there, fighting one of the longest wars we've ever had. But a mere decade is a drop in the bucket of the known written recorded history of Afghanistan and her people. It is interesting that the United States is now taking an interest in the people, the culture, the landscape, and its possible future.
Indeed, I believe it pays to learn a little bit of the history before you make quick judgments of what the United States should do with its involvement of Afghanistan. There are far too many people watching the news who don't really get it, but they should, especially as voters deciding which politicians are going to spend how much of our taxpayers money there.
There is a very good book I would recommend  especially to homeschooling parents who might have kids, that they  would like to see learn a little bit more about this country. This is a  book that I do own, and I would like to recommend to you, the name of  the book is;

"Afghanistan" (Countries and Cultures Collection) by Mary Englar, Capstone Press, Mankato, Minnesota, (2004), 64 pages, ISBN: 0-7368-2174-0.
One of the most fascinating parts of this book is the timeline from Alexander the great to the election of Hamid Karzai in 2002. This book also covers the Soviet Union evasion and occupation of Afghanistan in 1979. It also explains how the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 1996, and that's when things really changed, and those changes eventually affected the United States to a much larger degree.
The book is broken into chapters, but on the very first chapter it explains many of the facts that you need to know about the country, such as the population, resources, agriculture, and way of life. The Afghanistan history is completely interesting, and its economy is more interesting than you might believe. The hardship of daily life and culture is also quite interesting and it has really changed over the years.
There is a recipe in this book on how to make khati cookies, which is very cool and they aren't that hard to make. I enjoyed making these cookies as I read the book one afternoon, and I felt a sense of friendship with the Afghan people. I hope you will too, please consider buying this book and thinking on it.

Teaching Online - Home Schooling Book Review

If you are considering teaching online, or if you are a homeschooling parent and would like to have your kids learn online while at home then maybe you need to do a little bit of research. Maybe you need to consider what's out there, and the various hybrid courses and technology issues which surround the world of Internet courses and online teaching.
The other day, there was a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal that discussed why there never needed to be any poor weather days that prevented school. If the inclement weather was so bad that the school buses couldn't run, or the blizzard made it impossible to get to school, then each student could learn at home on their own computer. The article made some compelling arguments, and I found similar points of contention in a book on the subject.

In fact, I'd like to go out of my way right now to recommend this book to you, and it is a book that I do own of my personal library. The name of this book is; "Teaching Online - A Practical Guide" (College Teaching Series - Second Edition) by Susan Ho and Steve Rossen, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, MA, (2004), 339 pages, ISBN: 0-618-29848-7.
There is a great overview of online teaching and what it's about, and although it is written from the perspective of the institutional educator, it surely helps parents understand what they are dealing with when they choose which courses, online syllabuses, and information they wish their children to read and learn. Teaching in an online classroom is not easy, but those that have the skill and talent to pull it off, are the most desired and sought after instructors.
Why not pick up a copy of this book so you can familiarize yourself with low-tech and high-tech solutions used in Internet education. You can also find discussion forums where you can interact with teachers, and how they use whiteboards, chatting features, and instant messaging to make the online classroom feel at home. Why not learn what the teachers go through when they put together their training programs, and how they prepare themselves for their students.
It seems to me as a parent I want to know how the online teaching system works, what type of software and hardware works the best, and how the teachers are going to interact with my kids. You need to know these things up front, it's very important, and that's why a recommend this book to you. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Excellent Resource for Both Educators and Parents

Standardized testing is as much a part of school today as reading and math classes. Unfortunately, although most kids eventually learn to read and do the math necessary to carry them through life, many do not learn to take the tests that SHOW they have learned the reading and math. Whether parents and teachers like it or not, the student's ability to do well on standardized tests is increasingly important, and not only to the student. Teachers and schools are judged based on student test scores. Parents and teachers need help. Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A National Test Prep Adventure may be just the help they need.
Written specifically for the tests, Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A National Test Prep Adventure is available in a format geared towards national curriculum standards as well as some individual state tests.
Aimed at grades 2-5, the book is a series of silly stories that will engage the students. The stories are followed by a set of questions similar to the ones found on standardized tests. These questions are written to directly correlate to specific standards such as "Grade 4 Reading Foundation Skills" or "Grade 2 Math Operations." There is a guide in the back to help the parent or teacher see which specific learning standard is addressed.
Why would this book work when other teaching aids are unsuccessful? There are a few reasons why this book might be a better choice. First, the stories are quite funny and will have the students wanting to read on to the next one. Secondly, the book is extremely well organized and quite easy for adults to navigate (even if they have little of no educational background). On just a couple of pages in the front of the book, the author CLEARLY outlines how to use the book. A third plus for this book is that it appears that the book would be equally helpful for use with a student who perhaps does not have trouble taking tests, but lags a little in basic concept development. In other words, this is not just a test prep book. It could also work as a booster for a student struggling with a specific concept-say Grade 3 Math, Measurement and Data or Grade 5 Speaking and Listening.
A last idea for the book's usefulness is that it spans four grades worth of material. So as a parent, suppose your child has just finished grade 3. Over the summer you could use the book to review the material for grades 2 and 3, but then in the spring, haul the book out for use with test preparations for grade 4. Or you might even want it during the year if your student hit a bump with a given concept-say fractions.
